Spokane, Washington – A newly renovated sports field is being built this fall at Underhill Park in East Central.

The site will receive two renovated basketball courts, two dedicated pickleball courts, new walkways, lighting and improved fencing. The project will replace outdated basketball and tennis courts.

Construction will begin on Monday, August 19, 2024 and will temporarily close the plazas. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year (weather permitting), and new landscaping will be completed in the spring. During construction, the closest parking spaces will be in Grant Park.

“Many of our athletic fields are aging, and as part of our master plan process, we heard from residents how important these facilities are to health and wellness and neighborhood connectivity,” said Garrett Jones, interim city manager. “Right now, our primary focus is investing in our neighborhood parks — amenities like playgrounds, restrooms and athletic fields — and we’re seeing that in current projects like Liberty Park, Wildhorse Park and Corbin Park. These renovations are often the result of community grants and supporters, and we’re grateful for their cooperation in implementing these community priorities.”

The budget for the Underhill Park athletic field renovation is $628,000. The project is funded by the City of Spokane Parks & Recreation and a grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office. The project is also made possible by the generous support of Dick’s Sporting Goods, No-Li Brewhouse and the Spokane Hoopfest Association. Cameron Reilly, LLC is the contractor.

This summer, Corbin Park renovated a field, including the city’s first pickleball courts. There are now 35 courts in six parks. Parks & Recreation has set a goal of renovating one field each year.
