Over three consecutive days beginning July 25, Woodgrove, Virginia, wide receiver Connor Salmin visited three campuses, West Virginia, Penn State and Virginia Tech. It was a tiring trip, but it was beneficial as he tries to narrow down his list of suitors.

“Right now I’m building relationships and seeing which schools are really interested,” Salmin said. “I’m staying in touch with everyone and trying to figure out when we can visit schools. We’ve determined what I like and what I don’t like. I did that with my parents so we can remember it in the future. But right now we haven’t decided anything.”

Salmin was back in Blacksburg for the Hokie Fest. He was also there in March and received a scholarship, but this time it was a little more personal.

“We played a few team games, had a burger contest, a scavenger hunt and had a meal beforehand,” Salmin said. “I talked to Peyton Falzone for quite a while and spent a lot of time with him. It was a little different. This time it was about getting to know the other guys. There were a lot of new recruits, kids they recruit heavily. It’s about building relationships and getting to know people. It was really great.”

Assistant coach Fontel Mines was Virginia Tech’s top talent scout along with Salmin, and they continued to exchange ideas during the visit.

“We text each other pretty regularly, talk about practice or movie reviews or whatever,” Salmin said. “We’re pretty in touch. I think it’s definitely gotten stronger lately just because we’re talking about the upcoming season and my visit.”

Salmin said he plans to see the Hokies at least once this season. It will give him a chance to meet his sister, who is a freshman at Virginia Tech. Her parents are also Hokies alumni.

“I think all the coaches there are great and it’s a great education,” Salmin said. “The school is good, the team is on the rise and Coach Pry is building a great team. If you look at the preseason rankings, they’re right up there with the top.”

Salmin said the time in West Virginia was also helpful. It gave him the opportunity to reconnect with some of the coaches.

“It was really nice to see that again because they had their last summer practices and competed in team events, so it was nice to see the guys compete,” Salmin said. “I was able to spend time with Coach (Neal) Brown and Bilal (Marshall). We hung out a lot with the coaches and got to see the guys compete.”

Penn State was also about relationships. Although it was a short stay, Salmin said he was able to be more open with the coaches.

“It was nice to get there and see how (Marques) Hagans coaches,” Salmin said. “We went to spring training and saw how he coaches his players. I also camped and he was able to coach me a little bit. I got to compete and it was nice to get there and have him see me.”

Next, Salmin said he isn’t sure of his visit plan because his own game plan has changed. But he remains patient. Salmin said he continues to absorb as much as he can from the schools he’s seen.

“It hasn’t changed much,” he said. “Just getting to know coaches, seeing places I haven’t seen before and building relationships. We’ve kind of learned as we go along. Some people have told us things and we’ve figured it out while we’re there. We’re starting to get the hang of it.”
