According to Brett McMurphy, Gonzaga left the West Coast Conference to join the Pac-12.

“Gonzaga is leaving the West Coast Conference to join the Pac-12, a source told @ActionNetworkHQ,” McMurphy tweeted Monday afternoon. “The Pac-12 still needs at least two football members by 2026, but Gonzaga will receive a full share of conference revenue in the Pac-12 even without a football team, the source said.”

However, Jon Rothstein has since tweeted his own update that no agreement has been reached between the Pac-12 and the ‘Zags.

“Sources: Contrary to reports, Gonzaga currently has no agreement to leave the WCC for the Pac-12,” Rothstein wrote.

This addition would be interesting for the Pac-12 if it were to happen, given how it works within the framework of what they currently need as a conference.

To meet the minimum requirements for a conference in the NCAA, the Pac-12 needs eight programs with football programs. Earlier this month, they reached six by adding Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Colorado State to the remaining post-realignment members at Oregon State and Washington State.

However, Gonzaga has not fielded a football team since 1941. That would give the Pac-12 a total of seven members if the Zags were admitted as reported, but still two short of the required threshold.

This all came hours after three possible options decided against joining the Pac-12 earlier today. Memphis, Tulane and South Florida had offers to join the conference, which would have brought the total to 10, including nine in football if you include the Bulldogs, but they wanted to remain members of the AAC instead.

This would allow the Pac-12 to add one of the best college basketball programs in recent history in Gonzaga. The Bulldogs have been to the NCAA Tournament every season since the 2000s, a quarter century of success under Mark Few, during which they posted an overall record of 716-143 (.834).
