Concord director resigns two weeks after game goes offline

Two weeks ago, Concord performed so badly that it was taken offline. The team at Firewalk Studios was desperate about the situation they were in. The game they had spent years working on was DOA, attracting so few players and missing the mark so monumentally that it didn’t get the slightest traction upon release.

Now, according to a report from Kotaku, game director Ryan Ellis has resigned from his position and taken on a “supporting role.”

Downfall

Kotaku’s report noted that Ellis was “the main person responsible” for Concord, which failed miserably from the moment it launched last month. It wasn’t until this summer that a proper trailer for the game was released, and many balked at the price tag for a game that would have done much better as a free-to-play shooter.

A quote from Kotaku read:

Ryan really believed in this project and in bringing players together through the joy of it. Even though there were things during development that could have been done differently… he’s a good person and has a big heart.

It was Ellis who published the blog post announcing Concord’s failure and impending closure. He wrote that the game had not taken off the way the team at Firewalk had envisioned and that it was being taken offline to “explore options.” That was two weeks ago, and the entire industry has already completely forgotten about Concord.

Firewalk Studios counts around 160 developers, many of whom are now worried about their job security. At this point, it could go either way – the team could change the operating model and remove the premium price point, or the studio could close and Concord would be nothing more than a painful memory.
