Commanders sign top college star in new mock draft

It’s still early in the 2024 NFL season, but it’s not hard to tell what the Washington Commanders need. After two games, several positions considered needs at the start of the season remain priorities for Washington.

Four positions stand out: offensive tackle, edge rusher, cornerback and wide receiver. While it’s a little early to talk about the 2025 NFL Draft, the Commanders are expected to select somewhere in the top 10.

What if Washington could select a player who could meet two of those four needs?

In a mock draft by Ryan Fowler of the Draft Network, the Commanders selected the fifth player overall, selecting Colorado’s star two-way player Travis Hunter.

The Commanders have a huge need at cornerback and wide receiver. Given Emmanuel Forbes’ injury and Washington’s roster of wide receivers, they remain the perfect place for a transcendent talent like Travis Hunter. I expect him to be used on both sides of the ball in his career and change the way the industry currently evaluates talent at the two-way position. At this point, Hunter immediately becomes Washington’s best cornerback and can provide another target for Jayden Daniels in certain packages.

Fowler describes it perfectly here. Hunter would be an immediate starter at cornerback and play some offensive plays. It’s rare for a player to excel at two positions at such a high level.

Hunter has 30 catches for 342 yards and five touchdowns in three games this season. Defensively, he has 11 tackles and one interception.

General Manager Adam Peters will be looking for top-tier talent regardless of position, and fortunately, Hunter is a top-tier talent who checks multiple boxes.
