Commanders place Marcus Mariota on the injured list and add Sam Hartman

TAMPA, Fla. – The Washington Commanders have placed quarterback Marcus Mariota, who is set to back up Jayden Daniels, on the injured list and added former Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman to the active roster.

Mariota suffered a strained pectoral muscle in training after missing the last two preseason games due to groin problems.

Jeff Driskel is now Washington’s backup behind Daniels, who will make his first start on Sunday in Tampa Bay.

Washington signed Mariota to a one-year deal in March. The Commanders valued his experience, which included 74 games in nine seasons. He also built a close bond with Daniels – both were No. 2 picks and Heisman winners.

Driskel had a strong training camp to earn a place on Washington’s 53-man roster. Like Daniels and Mariota, Driskel showed he can make plays while moving.

Coach Dan Quinn said he noticed a big difference in Driskel after spring practice, which he attributed to him feeling more comfortable in coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s offense.

“He could really let it rip,” Quinn said. “I’ve known him for a long time, I know the competitor, but it’s his legs and his athletic ability that somehow set him apart.”

Washington signed Hartman as a free agent in the spring. The Commanders released him on August 26, but signed him to the practice squad the next day.
