Commanders fail to score a touchdown, but still beat Giants 21-18

The Commanders didn’t score a single touchdown on Sunday, but that didn’t stop them from beating the Giants.

Austin Seibert kicked seven field goals, including one on the game’s final play, and the Giants beat their division rivals 21-18 at home. The win is the first with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and it makes the decision to replace Cade York with Seibert this week seem like a smart one.

Kicking was a major storyline on both sides. Giants kicker Graham Gano left the game with a hamstring injury sustained on the opening kickoff and did not return, leaving the Giants with no field goals or extra points attempted after punter Jamie Gillan missed an extra point in the first half. Gano’s absence was felt just before the two-minute warning, when the Giants faced a fourth-and-4 attempt at the Washington 22-yard line and Daniel Jones threw an incomplete pass to ensure Washington had a chance to win the game with a kick of their own.

Jones completed 16 of 28 passes for 178 yards and scored two touchdowns. One of the scores was the first of first-round pick Malik Nabers’ career, and the rookie finished the game with 10 catches for 127 yards.

Nabers’ college teammate Jayden Daniels completed 23 of 29 passes for 226 yards and the Commanders managed 215 rushing yards. Daniels had 44, Austin Ekeler 38 and Brian Robinson led the way with 117 yards for Washington. That offensive balance was absent in the opener against the Buccaneers and the Commanders hope to see more of it next week against the Bengals.

The big game for Nabers was encouraging, but there was not much else to cheer about the Giants’ performance on Sunday. They are in Cleveland next weekend and another loss would put a lot of gloom over the heads of Jones, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.
