Columbia County high school student charged with threatening behavior

Several Evans High School students were expelled from school on Wednesday and a Greenbrier High School student was arrested after several threats were made against the schools.

Columbia County School District officials confirmed that a Greenbrier High School student made “remarks of a threatening nature” toward the school and the student was later arrested by Columbia County School District police, a news release said.

The student, whose identity is unknown, will be held accountable in accordance with the code of conduct and the law, the press release said.

The school district did not provide further details about the nature of the alleged threat.

In another incident at Evans High School on Wednesday, several students face consequences for their behavior and will not return to school because of a post circulating on social media containing false information, according to the school district.

The district said the post contained an “unfounded threat” and “has caused concern among some.”

“Student and staff safety remains our highest priority,” the school district wrote in the press release. “We continue to be grateful for those who report suspicious activity, and we take each one extremely seriously and will investigate it fully. Suspicious behavior should always be reported promptly to a school administrator, the Columbia County School District Police Department, or by contacting the CCSD anonymous hotline at 706-541-3600. In addition, we strongly encourage our families to help us stop the spread of false information by not further sharing posts of this nature on social media after reporting.”

The Columbia County School District released a statement last week noting that there had been 17 threats against schools within days of the fatal shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on September 4.
