Colt Gray’s two words muttered during his first 11-minute court appearance

Colt Gray, the suspected Apalachee High School shooter, muttered just two words during his arraignment in a Georgia court on Friday.

Gray, 14, is the suspected gunman who opened fire at the Georgia school on Wednesday, killing students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie. Eight other students and one teacher were injured and are expected to make a full recovery.

At 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Gray entered the Barrow County courtroom wearing dark green jail clothes. His shoulder-length orange-blonde hair shielded his face from the courtroom cameras. He was charged with four counts of murder and is expected to be tried as an adult.

Gray answered “yes, sir” to the judge’s preliminary questions during the 11-minute hearing, including that he could read and write English. The courtroom was filled with emotional adults. One woman held a stuffed Mickey Mouse while another clutched a handkerchief. One man hung his head sadly as he prepared for the hearing to begin.

His father, Colin Gray, 54, also appeared in court on Friday. Colin Gray reportedly told investigators he bought an AR-15 rifle used in the shooting as a Christmas present for Colin in December 2023. On Thursday, Colin Gray was also arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of manslaughter and eight counts of child abuse.

Wearing a gray and white striped prison uniform, Colin Gray told the court that he had completed 11th grade and graduated from high school. If convicted of all his crimes, he could face 180 years in prison.

Colin Gray rocked back and forth in his chair as the judge scheduled his first court hearing for 8:30 a.m. on December 4.

In May 2023, the FBI spoke with Colin and Colt Gray after receiving evidence that Colt had allegedly threatened on Discord to shoot at a middle school. In a police report obtained by NewsweekColin Gray said his son was struggling at West Jackson Middle School in Hoschton, Georgia, and went to Jefferson Middle School, about 17 minutes away, where things improved.

Colin Gray said he had hunting rifles at home but was not allowed to use them unsupervised. Officers also spoke to Colt, who seemed “quiet and reserved.” The then-13-year-old claimed he used to have a Discord account but deleted it before moving in with his father because it kept getting hacked. Discord is a real-time text, video and voice chat platform commonly used by gamers and streamers.

Colt claimed someone accused him of threatening to rob a school, but he would never say such a thing, even in jest.

The FBI’s leads also included an email address belonging to Colt Gray that was linked to the Discord account in question. IP addresses from the time the family was evicted from their home show that the Discord account was used in either Fort Valley or Statesboro, Georgia, and possibly Buffalo, NY as well.

The user profile name of the Discord account linked to Colt Gray was written in Russian, officials report. Translated into English, the name spells “Lanza” and allegedly refers to Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza. Colin Gray told officials that his son neither knew nor spoke Russian. Investigators concluded that the claim that Colin Gray or Colin Gray was behind the Discord account could not be substantiated.
