Colorado Football deletes controversial post about UCF game after Hurricane Helene

Deion Sanders and Colorado face UCF on Saturday in Orlando. While the skies have been clear near the “House of Mouse” for the past 12 hours, the first meeting between the Buffs and Knights comes after the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, which left a path of destruction in several states, including Florida. The storm has already claimed dozens of lives and is expected to cause at least $20 billion in damage.

Amid this crisis, Colorado’s social media team is facing backlash after posting a graphic that many found insensitive due to the nature of the situation on the other side of Florida. The computer-generated image shows security guard Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig standing on a Florida beach with water up to his knees, with the caption “24 Hours” and the countdown to Saturday’s game. A sign reading “Beware of Sharks” could be seen in the background. The post, which has since been deleted by CU’s social media team, sparked controversy, with many criticizing the timing of Helene landing near Tallahassee.

The flooding was one of the most devastating consequences of Hurricane Helene and began along the Florida coast before the storm made landfall. The rapid rise in water levels affected areas further south, as far away as Coach Prime’s hometown of Fort Myers on the Gulf Coast. Streets were already flooded on many beaches on Thursday evening, with high water expected to make the situation worse.

Hurricane Helene hit the Big Bend region of Florida and intensified into a catastrophic Category 4 storm with winds of 140 miles per hour. The storm unleashed a 20-foot storm surge that was described as potentially “unsurvivable,” along with hurricane-force winds and severe flooding. The aftermath of the hurricane has left Florida grappling with widespread damage and loss of life.

Colorado faces UCF on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm ET on FOX.
