College Football Rankings: ESPN releases updated FPI Top 25 after Week 3

Georgia survives in Kentucky | Victory in Texas | LSU strikes back in South Carolina

ESPN’s latest college football rankings are in after the network updated the FPI ratings of the top 25 teams.

Some teams have made great strides while others have fallen off despite winning and having weeks off, so this is an exciting look after the first quarter of the regular season.

Let’s dive into ESPN’s updated FPI rankings after Week 3.

The Longhorns dominated again, beating UTSA 56-7 on Saturday. And that game wasn’t even close. The bigger story was that Quinn Ewers got injured and Arch Manning stepped in.

ESPN’s FPI was kind to Texas when Manning scored five total touchdowns in the first real game of his college career. Man, it really helps to have a former No. 1 recruit.

Alabama didn’t need much time to beat Wisconsin on Saturday. The Crimson Tide took on the host Badgers in Madison and won 42-10.

The FPI bumped them up one spot this week. Jalen Milroe scored five touchdowns, further establishing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

Ohio State had the week off and the Buckeyes were still able to move up one spot. More on that in a moment.

This team is 2-0 and will face Marshall next weekend. They will probably be the heavy favorite and possibly climb a little higher in the FPI.

The Volunteers dominated Kent State 71-0. What else is surprising at this point? That’s why the FPI kicked them out again.

In three games, Tennessee scored 69, 51 and 71 points while allowing just 13 points overall. That’s a top performance on both sides of the ball.

The Bulldogs dropped three spots in the FPI this weekend due to a close game against Kentucky. No. 1 Georgia battled a strong Wildcats defense before eking out a narrow 13-12 road win, their first SEC game of the season.

In fact, the Bulldogs were down 9-3 midway through the third quarter. Fans are already forgetting this game.

According to FPI, the Rebels haven’t done anything this week. Nevertheless, Lane Kiffin’s team is a true top-10 team in the country.

Ole Miss went to Wake Forest on Saturday and outran the Demon Deacons with a 40-6 victory that forced Wake Forest to give away the rematch that evening. Ole Miss has allowed just nine points this year and has scored 168 points.

That’s what Notre Dame needed to bounce back from its unexpected home loss to Northern Illinois in Week 2. The Fighting Irish climbed three spots in the FPI after dismantling Purdue 66-7.

That’s a stark contrast to what we’ve seen from Notre Dame’s offense over the first two weeks. Riley Leonard threw for 112 yards, but it was Steve Angeli who threw two touchdowns. Leonard, however, ran for 100 yards and scored three points while Notre Dame rushed for 364 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

Miami continued its non-conference dominance with a 62-0 win over Ball State. That’s the next topic.

The FPI moved the Hurricanes up four spots for this performance. Miami next plays against neighboring South Florida.

Penn State dropped two spots in the FPI rankings this week, but the Nittany Lions had the week off and will face a struggling Kent State team at home next Saturday.

The Big Ten games will be the big test for Penn State. First they play against Illinois and UCLA before they go to USC. A more precise assessment should be made in a few weeks.

Missouri has fallen a little behind in the FPI, but Tiger fans need not worry. Eli Drinkwitz and his team are coming off a great 27-21 win over Boston College.

It’s a ranked win according to the AP poll, and now Mizzou hosts Vanderbilt to open SEC play. Let’s see how far this team goes.
