A cold front, mostly in name only, moved through the northern third of Texas early this morning. Isolated storms caused disruption in the D/FW Metroplex with brief intensification into hailstorms, but these storms have largely taken their medicine and calmed down.

This morning we will see the possibility of isolated to isolated storms continuing across Central Texas, southern North Texas and East Texas. Our cold front in name only will bring light northerly winds and a slight cooling effect to the northern two-thirds of Texas this afternoon.

The front will move into southeast Texas, the Golden Triangle and the coastal plains by late afternoon. As the front arrives, we could see an increase in thunderstorm density and intensity in these regions. Damaging winds and hail are possible at certain points. This activity will move away from the coast after 8pm. Storms will be possible across South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley this evening into early Thursday morning.

Tropical Storm Helene is strengthening this morning not far southeast of Cancun, Mexico. Maximum sustained winds are up to 65 miles per hour and minimum central pressure is up to 985 millibars. At least steady intensification is expected today as the impending hurricane moves north near the Yucatan Peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico.

Rapid strengthening is likely tonight and Thursday as the impending major #hurricane accelerates toward Florida Big Bend and the west coast of Florida. Nothing good will happen if a Category 3 or 4 hurricane hits the Big Bend in Florida.

Like Ike in 2008, #Helene will be a massive hurricane with an extensive wind field. Strong winds and storm surge are likely to extend at least two hundred miles east of landfall, with strong winds to the west. Other than some cloud cover in Ark-La-Tex on Friday and Saturday, no impacts are expected in Texas. Maybe a shower or two.

Temperatures will remain warm across Texas over the next five days. Highs will generally be in the 80s to around 90 in the northern two-thirds of Texas, with highs near 90 in the southern third of the state. Borderland El Paso will remain in the mid to upper 90s; Some days temperatures get dangerously close to 100 degrees. The same story will hold true for South Texas through the weekend.
