Closure of Boar’s Head plant impacts economy of rural town of Jarratt

JARRATT, Va. (WWBT) – The Boar’s Head manufacturing facility is the largest and most common source of income for residents of a small Virginia town.

As the plant temporarily ceases operations, concerns are growing about the impact on Jarratt’s economy.

The building was closed after the CDC and USDA found over 70 violations, including mold, insects and even pools of blood in the facility and on equipment.

For Jarratt, a town of only about 630 residents, the shutdown is an economic blow.

The city manager has not commented on the impact the closed facility will have on the city of Jarratt.

However, one local resident believes that local residents would be harmed if the power plant were not reopened soon.

“It will definitely hurt the community,” said Jarratt resident Richard Robinson.

Despite the harmful results, one local resident believes that the plant’s operation is necessary.

“People depend on Boar’s Head,” he said. “I wish they could get their act together and figure out that the situation caused the problem because a lot of people depend on it. I mean, look around, there’s only farmland, in terms of employment, it’s the only productive place in Jarratt.”

According to the CDC, if you eat contaminated meat, the first symptoms will appear immediately or within a month of consumption.

A Newport News family is now suing the Boar’s Head Meat Company after an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor died after eating the company’s liver sausage. The wrongful death lawsuit described some of his symptoms as shortness of breath, chest pain, back pain, diarrhea, constipation and more.

The CDC also reports that this listeria outbreak is the worst in America since 2011, when an outbreak was linked to cantaloupe melons.

“It’s sad, but I hope they get back on their feet,” Robinson said.

There is currently no set date for the reopening of the Boar’s Head production facility.
