Cleveland’s Forest City Brewery devastated after new housing developer kills trees, founder says

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A brewery with local history in Cleveland was destroyed after a developer knocked down two trees while building new homes.

The Christoff Group is building a series of townhouses right next to the Forest City Brewery on Columbus Road on Duck Island.

During construction, two large mulberry trees were cut in half.

The lost trees were about 150 years old and founder Jay Demagall believes they originally belonged to the beer garden.

Forest City Brewery posted a photo of the beloved trees on Facebook on August 10th after storms in Cleveland with this caption

Demagall told 19 News he knew the trees would be trimmed, but not to this extent, and he was considering taking legal action.

Now Demegall is concentrating on redesigning the beer garden, which includes having a chainsaw artist transform the large tree stumps into totem poles.

The attorney representing the Christoff Group developers issued the following statement to 19 News:
