Clemson University closed, USC Upstate virtual classes

Editor’s note: This story is continually updated.

While there is a flood warning in the Upstate until Friday afternoon due to Hurricane Helene, schools and colleges are making decisions about cancellations and e-learning.

Here’s what we know so far:

Furman University is closed until Saturday

According to Clinton Colmenares, senior director of news and media strategy at Furman University, “Dozens of trees fell across the Furman campus. Some buildings are experiencing flooding and leaking roofs. The Greenville area is experiencing widespread flooding and there are widespread power outages throughout the region, including on campus. There is no indication when electricity will be available again. Fortunately, no injuries were reported on campus. Crews have been in operation since this morning and will continue to be on campus making repairs and tree removal. The safety of students, faculty and staff remains our greatest concern.”

Due to significant damage in the area and power uncertainty, Furman has canceled all Family Weekend activities and postponed track and field events.

Spartanburg Methodist College is closed until Monday

Jeremy Handel, director of marketing communications, said the campus will be closed until Monday.

Greenville County Schools are canceling activities through Sunday

“All Greenville County Schools activities are canceled tonight, September 27th, through Sunday, September 29th. We will make a decision on Monday once we can evaluate our buildings,” said Tim Waller, director of media relations at GCS.

USC Upstate closed

According to the university’s warning system, the campus will be closed on Friday.

Converse University E-Learning Friday

According to the school’s website, Converse University will offer e-learning on Friday.

Clemson University closed

Clemson University’s main campus is closed and will remain closed until Friday, September 27, according to an urgent alert from the college. All courses scheduled for Friday are canceled.

All Spartanburg Community College campuses will be closed Friday

All Spartanburg Community College campuses will remain closed Sept. 27 due to weather, according to a news release Thursday.

Wofford College will operate remotely on Friday

Jo Ann Mitchell Brasington, vice president of marketing and communications, said, “As Hurricane Helene is expected to have the greatest impact on our region in the early morning hours of Friday, September 27, Wofford College has announced that the Classes will not be held in person tomorrow.” Instead, Wofford courses will be held according to the modality determined by the faculty. Additionally, remote work is encouraged for employees unless your work is critical to the health, safety and support of Wofford students.

The varsity volleyball games on Thursday evening and Friday evening and Saturday’s football game against Mercer University are still taking place.

Anderson University will go remote on Friday, no activities at any facility

Anderson University Executive Director of Public Affairs Andrew J. Beckner said the college will operate on a normal schedule Thursday but will transition to online classes and remote work for employees on Friday.

“There will be no in-person classes, activities or events tomorrow. This operational change affects all campus facilities, including University Center-Greenville,” Beckner said. “Essential services are available for those who choose to remain on campus or are unable to safely leave or arrive at their destination. The safety of our campus community is Anderson University’s top priority.”

The G. Ross Anderson, Jr. Student Center is the college’s emergency housing facility should it be needed. It is equipped with emergency power, emergency supplies, food and water, etc. and will be fully staffed in case of any emergency.

Spartanburg County School District 7 e-learning on Friday, varsity away game still to be decided

A post on the district’s Facebook page said: “District 7 will hold a regular school day on Thursday, but has canceled all extracurricular and evening activities for Thursday. We will also be hosting an e-learning day on Friday September 27th.”

“Cherokee County will continue to monitor the timing and impact of the storm in the hope that our Viking football team will still travel to Gaffney for competition on Friday evening. All other after-school programs and activities for District 7 are canceled for both Thursday and Friday.”

Spartanburg County School District 6 e-learning on Friday, no extracurricular activities this week

The district announced an e-learning day for Friday. All extracurricular activities have been canceled for Thursday and Friday.

E-learning on Friday, Spartanburg County School District 5, no extracurricular activities this week

The district announced an e-learning day for Friday. All extracurricular activities have been canceled for Thursday and Friday.

Spartanburg County School District 4 e-learning on Friday, varsity game to be decided

District 4 announced that an e-learning day will be held on Friday. Extracurricular activities are canceled for Thursday.

A decision on the varsity football game will be made by Friday at 2 p.m.

Spartanburg County School District 2 e-learning on Friday, no extracurricular activities on Thursday

District 2 announced that an e-learning day will be held on Friday. Schools are still open today, but all extracurricular activities have been canceled.

Spartanburg County School District 1 e-learning Friday, extracurricular activities canceled

According to a post on the district’s Facebook page, the district will host an e-learning day on Friday and all extracurricular programs, activities and sporting events scheduled for today and Friday have been canceled.

Spartanburg County School District 3 is open Thursday, e-learning Friday

According to Taggart Houck, PIO for the district, “Spartanburg School District 3 will transition to e-learning on Friday, September 27th. All extracurricular programs, activities and practices have also been canceled for Thursday and Friday. We will be monitoring the weather throughout the night. If the forecast changes and impacts the school day on Thursday, we will communicate this as early as possible.”

Anderson County schools are open Thursday, with e-learning Friday

According to Dylan McCullough, public information officer for Anderson County School District Three, all schools in Anderson County will observe a day of learning on Friday, September 27, due to the expected weather impacts from Hurricane Helene. They will be open on Thursday.

Individual districts will communicate to families any changes to extracurricular activities for September 26th and 27th.

“We urge everyone to heed weather warnings as we anticipate impacts from Hurricane Helene,” McCullough said.

Limestone University has canceled classes and events

Limestone University in Gaffney is canceling its courses on Thursday and Friday. Faculty and staff offices will also remain closed.

Stephenson Dining Hall will remain open and students are directed to gather at the Hines & Riggins Center during campus power outages, where there is a backup generator.

Limestone’s presidential inauguration scheduled for Friday has been postponed. The homecoming parade planned for Saturday was also canceled.
