Hundreds of trees fall in New York City as storms pass through

With dry weather and the sun at their backs, emergency crews were busy cleaning up what became a domino effect of damage at the corner of 103rd Street and Christie Avenue in the Corona neighborhood of Queens.

“The pole fell, the tree fell, and when it fell, it probably took the power lines with it,” said neighbor Bob Massano.

Massano has lived there with his brother Bill for about 50 years. Both said they have never experienced a storm this severe on their block that didn’t result in a power outage.

Massano sent a text message to Con Edison on Friday warning them about potentially dangerous live wires because the power was still working at his home.

“I was hoping they would come and turn off the power or something, but Con Ed, I know they were busy,” he said.

But the automatic replies were not helpful.

“We never had a power outage. They kept saying, ‘Your power will be back by midnight,’ ‘Your power will be back by 3 a.m.’ I kept telling them that was not the problem, the danger was that live wires could fall on the houses,” Massano said.

Con Edison said anyone concerned about downed lines should stay away from them, treat them as if they were live and call 911.

Neighbors along Christie Avenue said several cars were damaged, but they were thankful no one was injured – even if it was a close call.

“I saved his life,” said neighbor William Narvaez.

Narvaez happened to help a man sleeping on the sidewalk move away from a tree just before it fell. He and the helpers who were there Saturday said the tree was rotting and it was only a matter of time before it fell. Narvaez was out for a walk before the storm did its damage.

“I was walking for 10 minutes and the tree falls,” he said. “There’s always a reason why you’re in certain places… I can’t even imagine it.”

Storms from Debby paralyze power supplies for thousands of people in the New York metropolitan area

According to Con Edison, there have been 4,200 power outages across the city since Friday. Power has now been restored in most of them.

At the height of the storm, 14,000 Con Ed customers in Westchester County lost power. About 600 customers were without power Saturday night, mostly in Croton, New Castle and Ossining. Con Ed estimates that power will be restored to 95% of customers in the county by midnight.

JCP&L continued to experience major power outages on Saturday, with 2,500 customers still affected. PSEG Long Island reported just over 100 customers without power Saturday evening.

In Rockland and Orange counties, just over 100 customers were still without power.

PSE&G had several dozen extraordinary outages in New Jersey.
