Cincinnati Reds bullpen implodes in 7-1 loss to Atlanta

For six innings, the pitchers battled it out at Great American Ball Park. Jakob Junis held Atlanta to just one run before turning the game over to the Reds’ bullpen, but they couldn’t repeat his success. The Braves outscored Cincinnati’s bullpen by giving up six runs in the final three innings to secure the win on Wednesday night.

The game was pretty quiet until Jonathan India hit a two-out triple in the third inning. Unfortunately for Cincinnati, he got stuck there. In the fourth inning, Atlanta’s offense managed a two-out double before Marcell Ozuna hit an RBI single to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.

Jakob Junis didn’t allow any more runs in his 6-inning appearance. The Reds offense tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning when Elly De La Cruz hit a triple and scored on a safety squeeze bunt by TJ Friedl.

The game didn’t stay tied for long, as Marcell Ozuna greeted Tony Santillan with a home run in the 7th inning to put his team back in the lead. A bloop single followed, and then Ramon Laureano hit a double off the left-center field wall to put two men in scoring position with no outs. Santillan managed strikeouts around a walk, but Gio Urshela managed a 2-out, 2-run single to extend Atlanta’s lead to 4-1.

The Braves scored two more runs in the 8th inning against Justin Wilson to extend their lead to five runs. They scored even more runs in the 9th inning against Casey Legumina, who helped them when he caught a ball and threw it down the right field line before allowing a ground rule double that gave the visiting team its 7th run of the game.

Cincinnati got a 2-out walk from Santiago Espinal in the bottom of the 9th inning, and then he took second base on a defensive lapse to get into scoring position. He stayed there for the rest of the game as Atlanta evened the 3-game series with a 7-1 win.

Key moment of the game

Atlanta scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game.

Noteworthy information

In his last five appearances, Jakob Junis allowed three runs and only eight hits in 23.2 innings pitched.

The Reds only had five hits in the game and two of them were threes. That must be a rarity.
