Chris Sale of the Braves showed incredible reflexes when catching a ball hit at 167 km/h

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Chris Sale showed off his cat-like reflexes in Monday’s start against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park. In the midst of a classic pitcher’s duel against the Giants’ Blake Snell (more on that in a moment), Sale made one of the defensive plays of the year.

Facing Giants infielder Casey Schmitt with two outs and the basepaths open, Sale threw a fastball for strike one and then charged into the zone again with his heater, an offering that Schmitt played right back to Sale. With a nanosecond of reaction time, Sale extended his glove and snagged the 104 mph liner.

This has to be one of the hardest plays for a pitcher, but Sale made it look easy in a “look what I found” kind of way.

Sale, who played no role in the decision, pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 12 batters. On the other hand, Snell, who emerged from the All-Star break as a good player, pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 batters.

According to Sarah Slangs of MLB.com, Sale and Snell are only the fourth pitching duo to record more than 10 strikeouts and allow three hits or fewer in the same game.
