Chris Sale masters: Braves beat Giants 1-0 in overtime

After a miserable weekend in Colorado, the Braves desperately needed a win in frigid San Francisco. And thanks to incredible pitching from Chris Sale and the bullpen, the Braves took their 1-0 win in 10 innings on Monday night.

Chris Sale and Blake Snell were, in a word, outstanding. They traded blows like two heavyweight boxers who don’t want to separate. They dismantled the opposing lineup with ease for 6+ innings, and each of them threw over 100 pitches. If there were five better pitching duels in baseball all season, I would be shocked. What a performance by both guys.

The Giants took advantage of (another) defensive error by Ramon Laureano in center field on the first play of the game, bringing runners to the corners with a single in what looked like a “Here We Go Again” moment. However, Sale fought back and managed two strikeouts and a groundout to get out of the jam.

San Francisco couldn’t keep up with Sale after the first inning. He pitched seven innings, allowed three hits, no runs, no walks, and struck out a season-high 12 hitters. He finished the night with 107 pitches. Folks, you’re looking at the frontrunner in the clubhouse, battling for the NL Cy Young Award.

He even made this catch!

The Braves were equally lifeless in the box against Blake Snell — who has been incredible over the past six weeks — until Marcell Ozuna ended the no-hit effort with a double in the seventh inning. Matt Olson then managed an infield single, but three straight strikeouts ended the threat.

Joe Jimenez pitched in the eighth inning and rebounded well after a disastrous Sunday. Raisel Iglesias pitched an impressive inning in the ninth to send us into overtime.

In the 10th inning, Travis d’Arnaud came to bat with runners on the corner and hit the ball deep into right field to bring home the first runner of the game for a 1-0 lead.

And with the team so desperately needing a win, Iglesias took over in the 10th inning and was masterful, striking out the first two batters he faced and getting a line out to left field—appropriately to Jorge Soler, who was walking—to end the game.

The series continues on Tuesday, as Charlie Morton will look to get a few things under control after two disastrous starts in his last three games. His opponent will be left-hander Kyle Harrison. Here’s hoping the Braves can build on that. Get your coffee (or favorite beverage) ready again – first pitch at 9:45 p.m. ET.
