The aim of the exercise is to test reconnaissance, early warning, area control and firepower capabilities, according to a statement by Colonel Tian Junli, spokesman for the Southern Operations Command of the People’s Liberation Army, on his official WeChat account.

“The units are always prepared to respond to unexpected situations, thus ensuring the protection of national sovereignty, the stability of borders and the safety of people’s lives and property,” he added.
The firing exercise, which will last until Thursday, was announced on Monday by the People’s Liberation Army and the provincial government of Yunnan in southwest China, which shares a 2,000-kilometer border with Myanmar.
The exercise comes against the backdrop of escalating fighting on several fronts in Myanmar, where the military government extended the state of emergency for another six months in late July to assert its power.
The drilling areas include Ruili City near Huyu and Wanding Townships, Zhenkang County near Mengdui Township, and Gengma Dai and Wa Autonomous Counties near Mengding Township.
