China welcomes delivery of first offshore wind energy service vessels

The naming and delivery ceremony of the first two Chinese-built offshore wind service vessels (SOVs) took place on August 16 at the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) shipyard in Quidong, China.

The Zhi Zhen 100 And Zhi Cheng 60 The vessels were delivered to Shanghai Electric Wind Power Group by ZPMC, with Schulte Marine Concept (SMC) responsible for plan approval and supervision of vessel construction and commissioning.

The vessels are based on two different ship designs by Ulstein Design & Solutions and are the first vessels specifically designed for the offshore wind industry in China.

The Zhi Cheng 60 is a ULSTEIN SX197 design with 72.6 meters length and 17.5 meters width. It can accommodate 60 people and has a deck area of ​​400 square meters.

The Zhi Zhen 100 is based on the larger ULSTEIN SX195 design. With a length of 93.4 meters and a width of 18 meters, it can accommodate up to 100 people and has a total deck area of ​​620 square meters.

Both SOVs are equipped with the X-BOW and X-STERN solutions for optimal seaworthiness characteristics.

The vessels are equipped with a modern battery and direct current propulsion system as well as a powerful dynamic positioning system DP2.

In addition, the SOVs are equipped with a motion-compensated gangway for commuting, an offshore crane and high-speed daughter vessels.

“The two SOVs are the first operation and maintenance vessels for offshore wind turbines built in China and demonstrate the impressive performance and capacity of the Chinese shipbuilding industry. These state-of-the-art vessels will provide a strong and reliable foundation for the operation and maintenance of domestic offshore wind farms, while further promoting the sustainable development of China’s offshore wind industry,” said Krzysztof KozdronManaging Director of SMC.

Shanghai Electric ordered the two SOVs from ZPMC in 2022. The ships were launched at the shipyard one year later.
