Chiefs’ Red Wednesday supports families at Ronald McDonald House

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Red Wednesday has become a tradition of pride and unity for fans, reflecting their continued support of the Ronald McDonald House.

10-year-old Silas Wood has been diagnosed with cancer, news that is never easy for parents.

“It was very difficult for me as a mother. My husband struggled with it too, but he stayed calm when I freaked out and I stayed calm when he freaked out,” Bethany Wood said.

Bethany and Silas traveled to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City for treatment. What was planned to be a ten-day stay turned into ten weeks. Thanks to the Ronald McDonald House, they were able to focus on treatment and stop worrying.

“People come in and feed us. There are always snacks. There’s always something to eat if you need it. It’s just a nice place to rest and get away from the beeping of the hospital,” Wood said.

The RMHC has provided hospitality to thousands of families whose children are sick or injured. Tammy Greenberg said their mission is to give strength to these families during this difficult time.

“I think when they’re at the Ronald McDonald House, they feel like, ‘Oh, oh, look, I can get some real oxygen here again. They’re taking care of me so I can be with my child and take care of him.’ We hear the most wonderful things from the families we serve,” Greenberg said.

All this is possible thanks to events like Red Wednesday, where proceeds from flag sales benefit the RMHC.

“They’re all in, just like the Chiefs are all in supporting Kansas City. They’re all in supporting the Ronald McDonald House. And the Kansas City community, I think, is all in supporting the Chiefs,” Greenberg added.

If you missed the opportunity to purchase a Red Wednesday flag, there are still ways to help the RMHC. Check out the website to see how you can donate or volunteer.
