The Kansas City Chiefs have placed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the non-football injury list (NFI). The move, reported by Field Yates of ESPNmeans the fifth-year veteran will be ineligible to play during the first four games of the regular season.

The Chiefs said Edwards-Helaire missed several training camps because of an illness and did not participate in practices before the defending Super Bowl champions’ Week 1 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Edwards-Helaire, 25, announced on social media in late July that He suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder And explained to reporters that he suffered from nausea and vomiting, which sometimes required hospitalization.

“I have PTSD and cyclic vomiting,” he said, thanking team trainer Julie Frymyer for her help. “So it’s something neurological that they’re just helping me with and walking me through.”

“Sometimes I get hospitalized because I can’t stop throwing up,” he added. “Nothing can stop it. The only person who steered me in the right direction was Julie Frymyer, who gave me medication at the beginning when I had a seizure to get me over the hump. But I’m really, really badly dehydrated and losing weight very quickly. It’s really just not there mentally.”

Edwards-Helaire said he has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder since an incident in 2018 while he was a student at LSU. According to Baton Rouge police, he was one of two gamblers attempting to sell an electronic item and shot a man who tried to rob them.

Edwards-Helaire described the incident as a “self-defense situation.” Sources confirmed to the Associated Press and WAFB-TV at the time that he was indeed one of the players involved. The players were never charged and were released. A prosecutor ultimately said the two responded with justified violence.

Edwards-Helaire, the Chiefs’ 2020 first-round pick (No. 32 overall), is entering his fifth season. After promising first two seasons, he lost his starting spot to then-rookie Isiah Pacheco in 2022. Last season, Edwards-Helaire rushed for 223 yards on 70 carries and appeared in 15 games.

While Edwards-Helaire is on the NFI list, Kansas City also has running backs Samaje Perine and rookie Carson Steele on the roster behind Pacheco. Rookie Emani Bailey was signed to the team’s practice squad.
