Hamburgers may be the most popular American dish, but topped with cheese, they’re extra special. So, of course, there’s a National Cheeseburger Day, which happens to fall on Wednesday.
Cheeseburgers remain one of the most popular main dishes in the US, according to YouGov’s ranking of the most popular American dishes. While the hamburger tops the regularly updated list with 85% popularity, the cheeseburger is close behind at 83%, just behind French fries and grilled cheese (both at 84%) and tied with fried chicken (83%).
Americans eat an estimated 50 billion burgers a year, and nearly three-quarters of burger lovers (74%) say they typically top their burger with cheese, YouGov found.
Although National Cheeseburger Day, which occurs every year on September 18, has no historical significance, there is still disagreement about the birth of the burger. Pasadena, California, claims its birthplace, where a 16-year-old fast-food cook served the first burger at a roadside hamburger stand over 100 years ago. Other places that claim the birthright of the cheeseburger include Kaelin’s restaurant in Louisville in 1934, which gave it the name “cheeseburger.”
Wherever the cheeseburger comes from, if you’re craving one, many restaurants and burger shops offer specials and promotions on it on Wednesdays.
McDonald’s offer for National Cheeseburger Day
In the McDonald’s app you will find an offer for double cheeseburgers for 50 cents on Wednesday.
Burger King Week offers also include National Cheeseburger Day
Members of the fast-food chain’s Royal Perks loyalty program will receive a free cheeseburger with purchases of $1 or more on Wednesday. Burger King will offer other deals throughout the week.

Buffalo Wild Wings BOGO cheeseburger, plus free wings
Members of Buffalo Wild Wings’ Blazin’ Rewards loyalty program can buy a burger with one free on Wednesday. Choices include Jason Kelce’s selection, the Triple Bacon Burger and the all-new Bacon Mac & Cheese Burger. If you’re not a Blazin’ Rewards member, sign up on or before September 18 to receive the offer. It’s valid for dine-in, takeout and delivery via Buffalo Wild Wings GO.

Applebee’s Classic Burger Offer
Applebee’s is offering customers a “classic burger deal” on Wednesday, which includes one of its three Classic Handcrafted Burgers along with classic fries for $8.99.
Customers can choose from the Applebee’s Classic Burger, Classic Cheeseburger or Classic Bacon Cheeseburger, available for in-store consumption or online at Applebees.com or the Applebee’s mobile app.
Customers ordering through the app can select the “National Cheeseburger Day” option in the online menu to redeem the offer.
Double Original Cheeseburger Signature Stackburger from Dairy Queen free with purchase
From today through Sunday, Dairy Queen is offering customers a free double Original Cheeseburger Signature Stackburger with any app or online order of $1 or more.
The burger features two beef patties, spicy American cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard, according to the company, and the offer is valid at participating DQ Grill & Chill locations nationwide. The offer is limited to one redemption per customer and is not valid for in-store redemption.
SONIC offers several deals on National Cheeseburger Day
For those who want to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day early, Sonic is offering half-price cheeseburgers every Tuesday, including September 17, after 5 p.m.
Additionally, for a limited time, customers can get the Quarter Pound Double Cheeseburger for $1.99 or a Sonic Smasher for $7.
