The leading men of Cheers revealed that they skipped filming for a day to take mushrooms together.
Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson And George Wendtwho played Sam Malone, Woody Boyd and Norm Peterson in the popular ’80s comedy series, recalled the experience on the Wednesday, August 14, episode of the podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.”
The podcast was hosted by Danson, 76, and Harrelson, 63, and took Wendt, 75, on a trip down memory lane that led to the group’s hilarious recollection of their “truancy day,” as Danson called it, among other Cheers co-stars.
“John had just bought a boat,” Wendt begins, apparently referring to a fourth Cheers Actor, John Ratzenbergerwho played Cliff Clavin. “And he really wanted to show off, so we planned this little trip.”
Danson then explained that he and Harrelson were already “stoned” when everyone met on the boat.
“So we got in the boat,” Danson recalled. “Kelsey (grammar) had been up all night playing cards, and he went straight to the bottom bunk and fell asleep on the way there. He slept soundly. Woody turns to me and says, “Have you ever eaten mushrooms?” And I say, “No. No, I haven’t.” And he said, “Well, this is going to be a good time. We’ve got nothing to do. We’re going to go out on the boat.” We hadn’t had breakfast, so I was pretty hungry and I think I ate an extraordinary amount of mushrooms, and then I thought, “Oh, that’s OK.”
But things got out of hand when the last waves of a hurricane in Mexico drove the boat into the strong swell off the coast of Southern California.
“So people who don’t take mushrooms would get seasick quite a lot,” Danson said. “But I was sitting there getting more and more nervous and whatever it is – you get stoned or whatever it is when you take mushrooms – and I look at you, Woody, and you’re sprawled out on a bunk, and I think, ‘Oh, he’s so used to it that he’s just chilling it out and relaxing. I’m panicking. I’m having trouble breathing. I’m going upstairs.'”
Finally, Wendt managed to calm Danson down by holding the Curb your enthusiasm Star about every minute to remind him to breathe.
Danson credited Wendt with his eventual rescue, calling him his “lifesaver.” Wendt added that he had never tried mushrooms himself.
