Chase Bank glitch is ‘plain and simple fraud,’ says company

JPMorgan Chase is responding to viral social media posts about some of its customers attempting to take advantage of a “bank glitch” that essentially amounts to simple check fraud.

“We are aware of this incident and have addressed it,” a Chase spokesperson said in a statement to PEOPLE and other news outlets.

The spokesman did not comment on the extent of the fraud or the penalties for the accounts and customers affected.

However, they warned: “Regardless of what you see online, cashing a fake check and withdrawing the money from your account is fraud, plain and simple.”

Over the past few days, many users on social media platforms like X and TikTok have been discussing a so-called “glitch” at Chase that allowed customers to withdraw far more money from their accounts than they actually had by depositing bad checks and then immediately withdrawing the money from a Chase ATM before the check bounced.

(The procedure is similar to checkkiting.)

It is unclear how many Chase customers actually attempted to withdraw money using the bounced check “glitch.”

Some social media users also reported that attempting to withdraw cash this way resulted in a massive negative balance of tens of thousands of dollars.
