Charles Phan is re-offering his San Francisco live/work loft for $5.5 million

Just over three years after Charles Phan’s live-work space in San Francisco’s bustling Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood first hit the market for $6.2 million, it’s back on the market. This time, the award-winning chef and owner of The Slanted Door restaurant empire is asking $5.5 million for the property he and his wife, Angkana Kurutach, purchased in late 2005 for just under $1.8 million. The listing is being held by Trecia Knapp of Sotheby’s International Realty–San Francisco Brokerage.

Designed by noted Bay Area architect William Wurster and built in the early 1900s, the industrial-style building stretches from Wilmot Street to Bush Street along Fillmore Street. The building has a total of 6,300 square feet on three floors and includes a restaurant on the ground floor, which currently rents for around $11,000 a month, and a private living area on the upper floors with three bedrooms, four bathrooms and a rooftop deck with city views.

Mattina, a California-Italian restaurant and cafe operated by James Beard Award nominee Matthew Accarrino, spans 2,500 square feet on the ground floor, while the second floor features an attached one-car garage and an entrance to the living quarters accessed from the rear of the building. From there, a wooden staircase leads to the third floor, where the 3,700-square-foot living area features updated interiors featuring light narrow-plank hardwood floors throughout, high exposed concrete beam ceilings, and several large skylights.

Particularly striking is a combined living and dining area connected to a wraparound kitchen designed and built by Phan himself, complete with a large stone-topped island and industrial-grade appliances. Other highlights include a library/media room and two guest bedrooms, each with its own loft and sharing a bath, and a spacious primary suite with a wall of steel-framed windows, a sitting area, a walk-in closet and a spa-inspired bath with dual vanities and a glass-enclosed shower.

The icing on the cake is a bonus room with bath that opens via sliding glass doors to a large south-facing rooftop deck, ideal for outdoor relaxing and entertaining.

Born in Vietnam, Phan, 62, is a former Food Network contributor best known for founding his restaurant Slanted Door on Valencia Street in San Francisco in 1995. Since then, he has opened several more establishments, the most recent in Napa Valley, where Phan has owned a place since the late ’90s, and internationally in Burgundy, France. The two-time James Beard Award winner – widely known as the inventor of modern Vietnamese cuisine in America – has also written the cookbooks Vietnamese home cooking And The Slanted Door: Modern Vietnamese food.
