Charges against tractor-trailer driver after accident that closes part of I-64

HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) – A 62-year-old truck driver has been charged after a bizarre crash involving a semi-truck closed the westbound lanes of I-64 near the Henrico County-New Kent border Thursday.

According to Virginia State Police, the bed of the semi-trailer struck the road sign at mile marker 200 near the I-295 interchange at 9:36 a.m.

The loading area, which was empty at the time of the accident, was removed from the sign at around 11 a.m., but the highway remained closed until the afternoon.

“The taxi continued to drive and then stopped, apparently because it had become detached from the bed of the semi-truck,” said Matt Demlein, a spokesman for the Virginia State Police. “We are still investigating what caused it to actually hit the sign.”

There is currently no information on where the truck was coming from at the time. Virginia State Police stated that the semi had stopped at a weigh station on I-64 prior to the crash.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Richard D. Houston Jr. of Lorton, was charged with reckless driving. He was not injured.

The Virginia State Police are still investigating the accident, including the timing of events that led up to it and the direction the truck was traveling.

“We know it stopped at the scale on the west side directly across from our location and then drove off,” Demlein said. “I have no information on where it came from.”

One lane of I-64 West was reopened around 4:30 p.m.
