Chargers star suspended after serious attack on Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth

Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James has been suspended for one game for repeatedly violating NFL health and safety rules. The suspension was imposed for his punch of Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth. The punch was ruled unnecessary roughness on the field, and now James will miss his team’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. James can appeal the decision and hope to have the suspension overturned.

In a message from Jon Runyan, NFL vice president of football operations, it was stated that James could no longer violate the rules of the game and would therefore be suspended.

“Your continued disregard for the NFL’s rules will not be tolerated,” the memo said.

James’ suspension would be unpaid for the one game he would miss if he appeals and loses it. Freiermuth suffered no permanent injuries from the hit. However, he does have a history of concussions, which makes the blow all the more concerning for the Steelers and the NFL as a whole.

James has been repeatedly penalized over the years for what he considers high and dangerous strikes, and he is now suspended.
