Chappell Roan tells photographer at 2024 VMAs to “shut up”

Chappell Roan didn’t react quite so casually to the photographers on the red carpet of the 2024 VMAs.

As the 26-year-old tried to pose for the camera in her elaborate dress while looking away from the flashing cameras, she quickly turned around and shouted at a photographer: “Shut up!”

Roan continued to scold the invisible paparazzi, pointing at herself with her extra-long nails and telling him, “Not me.”

The singer wore a long brown dress, a thick cross necklace and her long, curly, fiery red hair was combed back.

This year, Roan has received four nominations, namely in the categories of Best New Artist, Push Performance of the Year for “Red Wine Supernova,” Best Trending Video for “Hot To Go!” and Song Of Summer for “Good Luck, Babe!”.

The rising star will also make her first appearance on the VMA stage. Other artists set to perform tonight include 2024 VMAs host Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter, Halsey, Karol G, Camila Cabello and Eminem.

On the red carpet, Roan took a moment to rave about her VMA debut.

“Well, we have a theme – we always have a theme,” the artist said of her medieval look, before hinting to her fans, “I won’t give too much away, but I would say take notes. Take it all in and take notes.”

And how does the star feel after his first appearance?

“I’m nervous,” Roan said. “There are a lot of technical things happening that have never happened to me before, but we’ve practiced so many times. I feel like this is the next step in my career, so I was like, ‘Damn, OK, it feels good to be here.'”

The singer joins a long list of superstars who have won the coveted award for best new artist, including Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo – something she does not take lightly.

“I’ve never won anything before, so that would be awesome. It’ll be cool,” Roan admitted. “The thing I’m most nervous about is performing in front of my peers. Just looking out and seeing people that I’ve been listening to forever and really look up to, that’s the scary part, but it would be crazy to win.”

And when she walks away with a moon man, Ronan knows exactly who she will thank.

“My ex,” she admitted. “You caught me. I’m really trying not to swear right now. I’m really trying to be quiet. It’s so hard! But I’m shouting out my thank yous, but also thank yous to my ex, you know the classics.”

And despite her newfound celebrity status, Roan admitted just last month that she doesn’t think people have a “right” to meet her.

The “Hot To Go!” singer took a moment to talk about the pressures that come with fame in a new TikTok video.

“I don’t care that abuse and harassment and stalking etc. is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little bit famous, whatever. I don’t care that it’s normal,” Roan told his followers.

She explained that it is “not necessarily OK” to accept “this crazy behavior” from fans just because it is normal for stars.

“That doesn’t make it normal. That doesn’t mean I want it, that doesn’t mean I like it. I don’t want whatever you think you’re entitled to when you see a celebrity,” Roan replied. “I don’t give a shit if you think it’s selfish of me to say no to a photo or your time or a hug – that’s not normal, that’s weird!”

“I’m allowed to say no to creepy behavior, okay?” she added.
