Chappell Roan is ready to conquer with her transparent dress and sword at the MTV VMAs

Chappell Roan was all prepared for tonight’s MTV VMAs, and she brought a sword with her. The singer, who is attending the MTV VMAs for the first time tonight, wore a sheer maxi dress with a cape on the carpet. Her own knight handed her the weapon as she posed for photos.

She will perform later this evening.

The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer is nominated for four awards, including Best New Artist.

Roan’s “Hot To Go” is in the running for Best Trending Video and “Good Luck, Babe!” is nominated for Song of the Summer. Meanwhile, “Red Wine Supernova” is on the shortlist for MTV Push Performance of the Year.

Roan has had a year that many describe as “meteoric.” She recently told Rolling Stone that in June, after performing at the Governors Ball, “I was getting almost a hundred thousand followers a day. At first I was in complete denial. They literally showed me some statistics and the only thing I could do was say, ‘No, no, no. It’s not like that.’ I couldn’t say, ‘I’m successful.'”

“It’s my dream job,” she added. “I never know if it will ever be the same again, and that’s kind of scary.”

She also revealed to the magazine that she and songwriter Daniel Nigro are already working on a new album: “We have a country song. We have a danceable song. We have one that’s really ’80s, and one that’s acoustic, and one that’s really organic, with a live band vibe, ’70s style. It’s totally weird.”

Of the pressure to top “Good Luck, Babe!” with another huge hit, she said: “(The next single) has to have more bite, whether that means more pop or rock brutality or just bite in the lyrics. Whatever I listen to – Joan Jett, Heart, Gaga – I want to feel like them. So I’m just inspired by that feeling and how I can capture it.”
