Chappell Roan curses and screams “Shut up” on the VMA red carpet

Chappell Roan yelled at someone to “shut up” on the Video Music Awards red carpet after the other person yelled the same thing.

A clip of the incident went viral on X during the event on Wednesday, showing Roan yelling at the photographers’ area while her stylist adjusted her dress.

She later said the VMAs red carpet was a “terrible” experience.

Previously, Roan, whose popularity exploded at the beginning of the year, had made her limits in public interactions clear in recent months, denouncing, among other things, the “creepy” behavior of her fans.

In the viral clip, Roan can be seen saying, “Shut up! Not me, bitch.”

While some initially criticized Roan for this, others supported her after a lengthy clip went online in which someone off-screen can be heard saying “shut up” before Roan yells back.

Some media outlets, such as the Hollywood Reporter, reported that a photographer shouted the phrase, but it is not clear whether the words were directed at Roan.

Later during the event, Roan told Entertainment Tonight that the red carpet was “horrifying… for someone who gets very scared when people scream.”

“It’s pretty overwhelming and pretty scary,” she said. “I yelled back. You have no right to yell at me like that.”

Wednesday’s event marked Roan’s first appearance at the VMAs, where she won best new artist, singing her song “Good Luck Babe,” which made the singer an overnight pop sensation earlier this year.

Roan’s weekly streams increased from under 3 million to 68.36 million in the first half of the year. Billboard reported in June.

Roan has been vocal in recent months about fans crossing boundaries.

On August 19, Roan shared two TikTok videos in which she called out her fans for being “creepy” to her, harassing her in public for pictures, following her, and stalking her family.

“I don’t want what you always think is entitlement when you see a celebrity,” Roan said in the second video. “I don’t give a f*** if you think it’s selfish of me to say no when I don’t want a photo or your time or a hug. That’s not normal. That’s weird.”

A week later, Roan also published a statement on Instagram with a similar message.

In an interview for the cover of Rolling Stone published Tuesday, Roan said many singers, including Billie Eilish, Elton John, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Charli XCX, had privately offered her their support following her confession.
