RB Leipzig started the Champions League season with a deserved defeat against Atletico Madrid.

Leipzig took the lead after just four minutes through Benjamin Seško, who headed home a ball blocked by fellow countryman Jan Oblak. That was all Leipzig could do in the first half, however, as Atleti slowly came into the game, gained more control and continued to trouble Peter Gulacsi. The Spaniards finally equalized when Antonie Griezmann volleyed in a cross from Marcos Llorente. Shortly before halftime, Leipzig showed signs of positive play, but it was clear that they needed their Red Bull.

Leipzig came out of the game much better in the second half, but still struggled to beat Atleti. Leipzig then lost momentum again and in the 89th minute the hosts deservedly scored their winning goal with a header from Jose Maria Gimenez.

After drawing with Union Berlin at the weekend and losing tonight, Leipzig seem to have taken a step backwards after beating Bayer Leverkusen before the international break. Leipzig simply seem to lack the creative spark, with Xavi Simons yet to reach the heights he reached at the Red Bull Arena last season.
