Harry Kane scored four goals, including three penalties, to lead Bayern Munich to a 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday.

In a match that set a record for most goals in a Champions League match, Bayern struck three times in the first half. Kane – who also scored a hat-trick in Saturday’s Bundesliga win over Holstein Kiel – converted a penalty in the 19th minute. Raphaël Guerreiro converted a superb pass from Jamal Musiala in the 33rd minute and Michael Olise scored again five minutes later.

Vincent Kompany’s team seemed to have the game completely under control, but the visitors hit back, scoring twice in two minutes shortly after the break. Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara were the scorers. Bayern responded with two more goals in four minutes – Kane and Olise each scoring their second goals – to put the Croatians in their place.

Despite leading 5-2, Bayern continued to press and Kane scored twice more from the penalty spot in the 73rd and 78th minutes. The former Tottenham striker has now scored 33 Champions League goals in his career, overtaking Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time leading scorer in the competition.

Leroy Sané added another goal in the 85th minute before fellow substitute Leon Goretzka headed home a record-breaking ninth goal in injury time. Bayern are the first team to score nine goals in a Champions League match, with the total of eleven goals only surpassed by Borussia Dortmund’s 8-4 win over Legia Warsaw in 2016.

Earlier, Juventus hit FC Schalke 04 3-1 on the return to the Champions League, Kenan Yildiz made history with the first goal in the new “league phase”.

The young Turkish winger put Juve ahead after 21 minutes with a stunning shot from inside the box. PSV goalkeeper Joël Drommel was powerless to stop the ball from bouncing off the inside of the post. The 19-year-old Yildiz also surpassed Alessandro Del Piero as Juventus’ youngest ever Champions League goalscorer.

Weston McKennie doubled the hosts’ advantage six minutes later when he fired a shot inside the right post from close range to put Juve ahead. Nicolás González sealed the win after the break, slotting in a Dusan Vlahovic pass before Ismael Saibari pulled one back for PSV in added time.

Juventus have returned to Europe’s elite club competition after a year’s absence. Last season they missed out on participation for the first time since 2011/12 after being deducted points in a case surrounding the club’s transfer dealings, and were also banned from all European competitions for breaching UEFA club licensing and FFP rules.

Sporty won easily 2-0 against Lillewho sent off English midfielder Angel Gomes after receiving two yellow cards. Viktor Gyökeres opened the scoring for the hosts in Lisbon in the 38th minute after latching onto a superb pass from Pedro Gonçalves.

Two minutes later, Gomes received a second yellow card for bringing down Gyökeres, having already received a yellow card for pushing Francisco Trinçao. In the second half, Zeno Debast fired a fantastic long-range shot into the top right corner to secure the win for Rúben Amorim’s team.
