Champions League: Feyenoord defeats Girona after own goals in chaotic duel | Champions League

David López scored GironaIt was the first ever goal in the Champions League, but the Catalan team lost 3-2 at home Feyenoord on Wednesday in an exciting duel in which both teams missed a penalty and there were two own goals.

López gave Girona the lead midway through the first half, but Yangel Herrera’s own goal and a strike from teenager Antoni Milambo turned the victory in favor of the Dutch visitors.

Ayase Ueda missed a penalty for Feyenoord and Bojan Miovski also missed for Girona before former Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek made it 2-2 for the home team. However, this joy was short-lived as Ladislav Krejci converted the ball into his own goal, giving Feyenoord the lead again. This time they were able to keep the ball and ensured that Girona started their first Champions League season with consecutive defeats.

Elsewhere, Ademola Lookman scored a goal and was instrumental in the other two goals Atalanta to a 3-0 win Shakhtar Donetsk when the Italians outclassed their Ukrainian opponents in Gelsenkirchen.

Atalanta have four points from two games after a 0-0 draw with Arsenal in their opening game, and Shakhtar remain on one point after they held Bologna to a goalless draw in their first game.

Atalanta took the lead in the 21st minute when Lookman curled a cross into the box that fell to Berat Djimsiti in front of goal and he controlled the ball before pushing it past goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.

Atalanta doubled their lead a minute before half-time when Sead Kolasinac placed a pass to Lookman in the center of the penalty area and the striker fired a first-time shot through the legs of his spotter Marlon Gomes and into the bottom corner.

Three minutes into the second half the game was all but over after Lookman played the ball wide to Davide Zappacosta and his cross into the six-yard box was headed home by Raoul Bellanova.

With the score at 3-0, Lookman, who also hit the crossbar in the first half, was substituted over half an hour before the end of the game and his work for the evening was done. The tie ended with the same result as the last time the two teams met in the Champions League in 2019.
