CEO of Allegheny Wood Products sells thousands of acres to the US Forest Service

The Monongahela National Forest will soon be expanded by approximately 2,700 acres.

John Crites, CEO of hardwood manufacturer Allegheny Wood Products, and his family announced plans this week to sell a property in Tucker County to the United States Forest Service to add to the preserve.

The property includes approximately five miles of land in Blackwater Canyon, a gorge carved by the Blackwater River that features a scenic hiking trail. The acquisition will expand public access to the land.

The purchase is being funded by a federal grant program called the Land and Water Conservation Fund. In a press release Monday, Sen. Joe Manchin (IW.Va.) expressed gratitude for the sale and said the estimated value of the property is about $14 million.

“This is a huge win for the Mountain State and the nation as people will now be able to enjoy more of the true treasures of wild and wonderful West Virginia,” he said. “When completed, this deal will provide wonderful opportunities for outdoor recreation, which will strengthen opportunities for tourism, job creation and economic growth in the region.”

The acquisition of the property is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
