Celebrating a century of research and service in Winchester | Virginia Tech News

We celebrated both the 100th anniversary of having a fruit lab in Winchester and the 30th anniversary of the opening of this facility. There are currently six faculty labs. So we have an entomology lab, a horticulture lab, a grape pathology lab, an apple pathology lab, and an enology lab. We’ve had some really important research and extension results that have changed the way people in the Mid-Atlantic and Virginia grow apples and grapes. The mission has remained the same for 100 years. It’s to help local growers overcome the challenges of their industry and make their operations more profitable and benefit the community as a whole. This facility is a wonderful facility. I’m wonderful about the people here and the fact that you can reach them. I just want to say how much this AREC is an invaluable resource for us in the fruit tree industry here. Not just the information meetings and the knowledge and, you know, the sharing that happens and things like that, the blogs and the emails. I can’t tell you how invaluable that is. And the personal relationships that you have with the people here, the researchers, that you can email them, call them, talk to them, ask them questions, is huge. And I really think that gives us an advantage in our industry over people who don’t have that right on their doorstep. The Land Grant Mission across the United States is the envy of the world. We have direct contact with the clients that we serve. We get the best research ideas from them, the best outreach ideas, and we can implement them and directly impact their livelihoods and their communities. We’ve been here for 100 years. Mid Atlantic and Virginia is still a strong state that produces grapes and fruit trees. There are a lot of challenges. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges. We have insects that come up at different times and produce additional generations every year. We have invasive insects. So there are many challenges for us as scientists and the community. We have a strong team of scientists and technicians who are keen to continue the long tradition of research and expansion at the station.
