Catfish star Nev Schulman broke his neck in a horrific accident when his motorcycle collided with a truck.

The 39-year-old said the accident occurred on Monday while he was on his way to pick up his two-year-old son Cy from school.

He was admitted to intensive care after tearing two nerves that control his muscles – an injury that in some cases leaves the patient permanently unable to walk.

However, Schulman assured his fans in an Instagram post on Saturday that he was “not paralyzed” and was “expected to make a full recovery.”

Schulman posted several videos of himself wearing a neck brace in the hospital, including one in which he slowly gets out of bed with the help of two staff members.

The accident happened on Monday and in the six days since then he has regained the ability to walk down the hospital corridor on his own.

His album included a gruesome close-up of the gaping wound on his neck, as well as X-rays showing first the extent of the internal injuries and then his recovery.

Schulman also included heartwarming pictures and videos of his family hugging and comforting him in the hospital.

In one photo, his wife Laura Perlongo can be seen snuggling up next to him in his bed, the two of them smiling bravely for the camera.

A short clip showed her three children Cleo (7), Beau (5) and Cy (2) paying him a visit and wrapping him in a group hug.

“I went fishing with my family on Sunday. It was incredible, my son’s idea. One of those days when it just works,” he remembers. “It was magical. A day full of love and wonder, like only quiet days in nature with the family can be.”

He added: “Monday was not one of those days. Monday was a day when I learned what ‘before the accident’ really means. And Monday made me realise how lucky I was to have Sunday. It’s true what they say – life can change in an instant.”

Schulman wrote: “I never made it to pick up my son from school on his bike. In some ways, I’m glad I didn’t. I was alone at impact. Me and the truck. And then, I guess, the sidewalk. I was alone and unconscious. And then conscious again. Maybe I was OK (I wasn’t). Maybe I can still do my long run on Thursday (I couldn’t).”

He revealed: “I broke my neck. C5 and C6 to be exact. Stable fractures. I’m not paralyzed. My hands were a question mark for a minute, but the human body is incredible and so are PEOPLE.”

He praised the “incredible knowledge and care” he received from the medical community and said: “I find it hard to feel sorry for myself when I hear from doctors how many people with similar injuries will never walk again.”

He noted that he was “lucky to be here, to be alive, to hug my family and is expected to make a full recovery.”

“And I’m really starting to understand the meaning of gratitude. For the big and small things before the accident and now for everything moving forward.”

He added: “We hadn’t planned to go fishing last Sunday and my instinct told me not to plan a day trip. But looking back a week later, I’m glad I said yes.”

He noted that he was “lucky to be here, to be alive, to hug my family and is expected to make a full recovery.”

Schulman became the star of the 2010 documentary Catfish and is now the co-host of a reality show of the same name on MTV, in which he also appears.
