Cartoons for August 25, 2024: Democratic National Convention, cell phone bans in schools, end of summer
In this week’s gallery, cartoonists have focused entirely on the Democratic Party Convention in Chicago.
Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the presidential nomination that until a month ago was expected from incumbent President Joe Biden. On the cover, David Horsey illustrates the passing of the torch in a relay race. “Don’t drop it,” Biden advises a worried-looking Harris.
Biden is portrayed by Nick Anderson as a less willing torchbearer; he sees the president as a bridge for Harris to walk across. Dana Summers draws the two in an embrace, while the shadow they cast shows Harris kicking Biden to the curb. Michael Ramirez’s Biden is ejected from the party’s jet with a bouquet of roses, a “Thank you, Joe” sign and no parachute. Scott Stantis notes that Biden’s speech on Monday night began so late that many in the audience had already left.
Other topics include the question of who really runs the country (Joey Weatherford), the emphasis on joy, unity and hope in a hostile America (Walt Handelsman) and the reactions of Republican candidate Donald Trump to the events in Chicago (Nick Anderson, Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen).
Other topics in this week’s gallery include the futile search for an end to the war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip, the start of a new school year with cell phone bans in many schools, Disney’s tough legal battle in a wrongful death case, and the end of summer.
The cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
