Carson Daly returns to MTV to present Lisa with the award for Best K-Pop at the VMAs

Carson Daly felt right at home as he read out the nominations for best K-Pop at the 2024 MTV VMAs.

As he took the stage, he paid tribute to his humble roots on “TRL.”

“It’s an honor to be here for the 40th anniversary of the VMAs,” he said. “For those of you who are too young to know who I am, I used to host a show on MTV a long time ago called ‘Total Request Live’ or ‘TRL.’ It was the best show, the kids went crazy in Times Square, and every day after school I was at your mom’s house, so please tell her I said hi.”

“But now I get to present an award to a new generation of fans who are crazy about a category that didn’t even exist back then,” he continued.

After the nominations were read out, it was announced that Lisa from Blackpink had won the award.

Receiving the award for best K-pop was a nostalgic moment for Carson and his fans. The TODAY show host previously hosted MTV’s “Total Request Live” from 1998 to 2008.

At the time, Total Request Live, also known as TRL, was one of the biggest shows on MTV. The show featured many famous artists, including Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears. And of course, fans also got to choose which music videos were featured on the show.

In 2023, Carson looked back on his time on “TRL” in a post he shared on Instagram.

He said: “25 years ago today, before Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, there was TRL. The first truly interactive, fan-driven show on television. It was my home for some of the best years of my life.”

He added, “I’ve had the privilege of bringing so much to so many people. Music, movies, celebrities, world events and more. All live, every day. I’m so grateful for that time and for everyone who allowed me (and my T-Mobile SideKick) to be a part of their lives. I hope you’re happy and healthy 25 years later. Hey, I wonder if that Backstreet Boys fangirl who yelled at me is still mad? Lol… Good times.”

Carson also talked about “TRL” in an interview with TODAY.com, noting that in many ways, it still feels like he’s working on “TRL” on the TODAY show.

“I’m now on the TODAY show, which, when you think about it, is ‘TRL’ for adults,” he said.

“I just left the TODAY show where I spent two hours outside with screaming adult fans in New York. There’s so much ‘TRL’ in my day job on the TODAY show. If you were 18 and came home from school and saw me on ‘TRL,’ chances are you’re 34 now, have two kids and watch the TODAY show. You ask me about ‘TRL’ every day.”
