Canelo vs Berlanga weigh-in results: Canelo Alvarez ready to defend his super middleweight title

Canelo Alvarez is registered for another championship fight.

At Friday’s ceremonial weigh-in for Canelo’s upcoming fight against Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas, the reigning WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight champion was announced at 166.75 pounds. Berlanga also managed to hold weight, coming in at 167.5 pounds.

This is Canelo’s eighth consecutive super middleweight title fight, a run interrupted only by a light heavyweight championship fight against Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. Bivol defeated via unanimous decision, the Mexican star’s only loss in his last 21 fights. Most recently, Canelo defeated Jaime Munguia, retaining his belts and improving his professional record to 61-2-2.

Berlanga enters the competition with an undefeated record, with 22 wins and 17 knockouts to his name.

With the fight taking place on Mexican Independence Day weekend, the fighters’ respective nationalities became a much-discussed topic. Berlanga is proud of his Puerto Rican heritage and spoke about the rivalry in his post-weigh-in interview.

“Shit, tomorrow is war,” Berlanga said. “Puerto Rico versus Mexico. … I love everything here. This is all my drive. I belong here, you hear? I belong here.”

“Knockout,” Berlanga added later when asked to predict the outcome. “And then we’ll bring the rematch to New York. Puerto Rican Day weekend.”

Canelo, who is considered the clear favorite with odds of around -2,000 at some bookmakers, was not fazed by Berlanga’s comments.

“Look, I don’t have much more to say about Berlanga,” Alvarez said through a Spanish translator. “What I can tell you is that he’s about to meet someone very, very different from what he’s used to.”

“That’s easy to say, but he’ll find out on Saturday night,” Alvarez said of Berlanga’s knockout prediction. “It will be something different.”

Canelo vs. Berlanga takes place on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
