As the odds suggest, it looks like Álvarez will dominate this fight. This is far from the first time a promising contender has faced Canelo, and as long as he’s working at his best, this should be a relatively easy night for him.

To those worried about his decline, Álvarez has assured that he will soon show that he is still at the top of the sport.

“I just want to show everyone that I’m still the best,” he said during a pre-fight press conference. “I still love this sport. If I stop loving it, you’ll know. I love my routine and I love going to the gym every day.”

At the same time, Berlanga is aware of the work that lies ahead of him and has no intention of letting this opportunity go to waste.

“This is the chance of a lifetime,” Berlanga said at the same press conference. “This weekend will be an exciting duel. … I will convince everyone. We have Puerto Rico against Mexico and we will face each other on Saturday night.”

The Mexico vs. Puerto Rico aspect is a good way to sell the fight, but Berlanga doesn’t get much respect from the bookies and it’s easy to see why.

The Puerto Rican began his career with a string of first-round knockouts, but his punching power declined as the competition improved, recording just one knockout in his last six fights.

Berlanga does indeed have a reach advantage. At 6’1″ with a 6’1″ reach, he will dwarf Álvarez in the ring. His ability to use his jab and exploit that reach will be crucial if he wants to make things interesting.

The more likely scenario is that Álvarez’s vast experience and superior skills will win the day here. Berlanga is a fighter who thrives when he can control the tempo of the fight and increase it when necessary.

Álvarez will not allow him to do that. He will close the distance, invite Berlanga to throw punches and then counter them skillfully.

It may not be enough for a decision, but it should be enough to win the fight comfortably and keep the belts around their waists.
