World number one Jannik Sinner was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open against Russian Andrey Rublev.
The eighth-ranked player in the world won 6-3, 1-6 and 6-2 against the number one seeded Italian in a match in Montreal that was interrupted due to rain.
Sinner has been battling an injury to his right hip and the 22-year-old has been massaging the area frequently, which could become a problem for him with the US Open starting in two weeks.
“That was a really great match from me. Jannik is an incredible player and has played incredibly well for two years. I just hoped that I could keep up with him,” said the 26-year-old.
Friday’s match was cancelled due to rain, so both men played their round of 16 matches earlier in the day. Sinner beat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 6-3 and Rublev beat American qualifier Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-2.
Rublev will face another Italian, Matteo Arnaldi, in the semifinals after defeating Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-4, 7-5.
At the women’s tournament in Toronto, defending champion Jessica Pegula defeated fellow American Peyton Stearns 6:4 and 7:5 and reached the semifinals.
Pegula will play Diana Schnaider in the semifinals after defeating her Russian compatriot Liudmila Samsonova 4:6, 6:1, 6:4.
Amanda Anisimova of the United States – who returned to tennis in late 2023 after a nine-month break due to mental health issues – defeated Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-2.
Anisimova will play against Emma Navarrowho defeated another American, Taylor Townsend, 6:3, 7:6 (7:5).
The US Open begins in New York on August 26th.
