Cameron Ferry will be closed for six months

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana (KPLC) – The Cameron Ferry will be out of service next weekend for maintenance that is expected to last approximately six months.

According to the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), the Cameron Ferry will be taken out of service beginning at midnight on Saturday, August 31, to prepare for government-mandated dry dock storage.

In the meantime, the DOTD has arranged for a relief ferry to maintain limited service across the ship channel.

While the relief ferry is in operation, vehicle combinations longer than 50 feet must detour and may use I-10.

In addition, the boat ramp on the west side of the Calcasieu River adjacent to the ferry dock will remain closed for safety reasons while the relief ferry is in operation.

Once work begins, the Cameron Ferry is expected to be in dry dock for approximately six months, according to DOTD. During the planned downtime, the Cameron Ferry will undergo a mid-cycle hull survey, an internal structural review, and refurbishment and repair of major mechanical systems.

The Department of Transportation is asking the public to be patient and instructing drivers to be cautious and watch for work crews and their equipment.
