Caitlin Clark named AP Rookie of the Year, A’ja Wilson named WNBA MVP

WNBA stars Caitlin Clark and A’ja Wilson were named the Associated Press Rookie of the Year and the League Player of the year.

The WNBA announced the news on Sunday.

According to AP, Clark scored the most points in a single season as a rookie and also broke the league’s assists record for that season. She made her professional debut for the Indiana Fever in May during a WNBA preseason game. She will make her first playoff appearance on Sunday when the league’s postseason begins in Connecticut.

“This recognition would not be possible without an incredible group of teammates and coaches, and we look forward to continuing an exciting regular season into the postseason,” she told the AP.

No other female basketball player has ever received as much attention and admiration as Clark, a two-time national college player of the year from Iowa and the all-time leading basketball scorer.

Wilson was the fourth player in WNBA history to be named Player of the Year three times. She was also the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in a season. The Las Vegas Aces star played for the US team during the Paris Olympics and helped the team to a 102-76 victory over Japan.

Wilson was also unanimously voted Player of the Year by the AP.

“It means a lot to me,” Wilson told AP about her Player of the Year award. “The preparation I’ve put in for this season.”

The South Carolinian native is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time WNBA champion.
