C Palace 0-0 Man United (21 September 2024) Match Analysis

Manchester United were forced to settle for a solitary point despite a dominant performance from Erik ten Hag’s side as they were held to a 0-0 Premier League draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The draw – at least a small revenge for United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Palace in May, which marked the low point of last season – left them 11th in the table with seven points. Oliver Glasner’s Palace are 16th on three points.

Selhurst Park continues to prove a bafflingly difficult place for United, who have failed to win there in their last five games and have only scored one goal in that time.

“We didn’t win, but I’m happy with the work and sacrifices of my teammates. We had so many chances. It’s painful to come home with a point when we deserved to win,” said United goalkeeper André Onana.

Ten Hag’s side will rue Saturday’s missed chances, including two agonising near misses in quick succession in the first half, with Alejandro Garnacho and then Bruno Fernandes smashing shots onto the bar within seconds of each other, both holding their heads in disbelief.

Onana barely played in the first half, but came on several times in the second as Palace’s side were much better after the break.

Onana made a superb double save, throwing himself into Eddie Nketiah’s shot and then leaping into the air to prevent Ismaïla Sarr from volleying the rebound into the net.

“I think we were much better than them, we had the best chances during the game,” Onana said. “(But) when you play for Manchester United you have to win. We go home disappointed.”

Glasner’s halftime message addressed his team’s lack of intensity, which was reflected in their chipper performance in the second half.

“It was the intensity, the belief. He was obviously frustrated with the way we were playing, he thought we were playing so cautiously,” said Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson. “(He said), take the safety cap off and go for it. We’ve got nothing to lose.”

Palace had a great chance to secure the win late in the game when Sarr latched onto a cross from Jeffrey Schlupp but his shot flew just wide of the near post.

“We obviously missed a couple of important chances, I think Andre made some great saves,” said Henderson. “It was a game of two halves and I think we take the point and are happy about it.”
