ESPN: SMU has a 79% chance to beat BYU

The site gives the Mustangs a 79 percent chance of defeating the Cougars in Friday’s game.

Randy Chambers writes: “BYU still has questions on both sides of the ball that won’t be answered when they play Southern Illinois. Until then, I can understand why SMU is a big favorite at home. However, this is the same SMU team that almost lost outright to Nevada in week one as a 27-point favorite. After seeing that, I’m just not running out the window for double-digit points. Jake Retzlaff just had the best game of his career, whatever that means, and Martin is a terrific running back who could give SMU some trouble. BYU also has a 4-2 ATS record in its last 6 games as a double-digit underdog. I’m just not completely sold on SMU at those numbers. Give me BYU and the points.”

Pick Dawgz: Take BYU with the points against SMU

Shane Mickle writes: “SMU wants to play two quarterbacks because both are talented, but I think it will ultimately hurt them. They can’t get into a rhythm and the lack of it will hurt them. BYU may not be as good as they have been in recent years, but they still have a good quarterback and they’ll get a good quarterback here. They may not win, but BYU will keep this game close. Bet on BYU against the spread.”

Eddie Kline writes: “BYU has benefited from playing against inferior opponents in recent years, and their roster is not ready for Power Four football. SMU has prepared extremely well for the move to the ACC Conference and will earn a home win that goes beyond the total points.”

Big 12 Football Title Game Prediction: Who will win the conference?

Fan Insider: BYU will beat SMU on Friday

Justin Giles writes, “For BYU, this game represents a huge opportunity. Traveling and playing in the Texas heat will be challenging, but SMU’s lackluster performance and ongoing struggles could benefit BYU. With their defensive line, led by preseason All-Big 12 pick Tyler Batty, ready to exploit SMU’s weaknesses, BYU has a good chance to pull off an upset. Given their recent history of September upsets, BYU could very well continue their trend of early-season upsets. If BYU wants to bowl this year, this game can be crucial for the Cougars.”
