Byron Center public schools closed Monday due to “possible threat”

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Byron Center Public Schools will remain closed Monday after the district was notified of a “potential threat,” the superintendent wrote in a letter to families Sunday evening.

“This afternoon, Byron Center Public Schools was notified of a possible threat to West Middle School or Byron Center High School for Monday, September 9, 2024. We continue to work with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office to determine the credibility of the report,” Superintendent Kevin Macina wrote in a Letter to the families.

“For the safety of the entire BCPS community, the entire district will be closed on Monday. As soon as we gather relevant information, we will keep you updated. Further information regarding extracurricular activities will be announced,” Macina wrote in the letter.

Room to Bloom, BCPS’s children’s center, will also be closed on Monday.

He promised to keep parents updated and continue to review safety procedures to ensure they are up to date and “effective for all buildings and events.”

According to a letter from the principal, there was also an investigation at East Kentwood High School.

Dominic Lowe, principal of the East Kentwood Freshman Campus, told students and families Sunday evening that there was no safety threat to the community amid potentially “concerning” social media posts.

“I am writing to inform you of some talking points that have been circulating on social media this weekend that may be concerning to some of our students and families,” Lowe wrote in a letter to families and employees on Sunday.

Lowe credited a student with tipping off the school, though he did not specify what the conversations were about. East Kentwood and its School Resource Officer from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office worked together to “successfully resolve this situation,” he wrote.

“At no point in this situation was there a threat to the safety of our school community,” Lowe wrote.

He stressed the importance of safety and encouraged students to share their concerns with a trusted adult at school. Silent observer or OK2Say.
