Buster Posey writes letter to Giants fans after taking over as top executive – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Buster Posey had a whirlwind earlier in the week that began on Monday when he was announced as the Giants’ new president of baseball operations, replacing Farhan Zaidi, who was fired after six years in the position.

The franchise icon, along with Giants chairman Greg Johnson and manager Bob Melvin, met with the media at Oracle Park on Tuesday morning.

A few hours later, the Giants sent a long letter from Posey to the fan base.

“After meeting with the media today to discuss the news of my new role as President of Baseball Operations, I wanted to reach out to you directly to let you know how excited I am about what we will build together “To bring championship baseball back to San Francisco,” Posey wrote. “I was motivated by two key factors in my decision to lead baseball operations – our fans and our players. I know firsthand what an incredibly loyal fan base we have, and I want to do everything I can to create the next great team that everyone can fall in love with.

Posey retired as a player three years ago and took on the role of board member with the Giants. But as the team struggled to compete for the MLB playoffs in the 2024 MLB season, the 37-year-old took on a larger role in baseball operations.

After helping seal third baseman Matt Chapman’s six-year, $151 million contract extension in September, Posey is now tasked with making the Giants a perennial contender again.

“I know there is a lot to learn and I’m excited to get started,” Posey wrote. “Like each of you, I am a Giants fan, my family is Giants fans, and it is important to me that we deliver a team that creates memories and experiences for this generation and future generations of Giants fans. Thank you for your support. “You have given to me and my family since we arrived in San Francisco in 2009…the Bay Area is our home…and for years to come.”

Posey and the Giants’ future general manager have a busy winter ahead as they look to re-sign impending free agent Blake Snell and retool the rest of the roster for the 2025 MLB season.

The task is daunting, but Posey, one of the most popular figures among Giants fans, is up for the challenge.
