The U.S. Postal Inspection Service protects the Postal Service, its employees, and its customers and investigates any dangerous or criminal misuse of the mail, such as robberies, burglaries, attacks on mail carriers, prohibited mail, fraud, and mail theft.

United States Postal Inspector General Christiana Kasian said the investigation is ongoing but that suspects are currently being identified and that more information will be released as it becomes available.

“We don’t really know the motive until we talk to the perpetrators,” Kasian said. “I mean, they’re very broad and far-reaching, and everyone can probably come up with their own motive, that’s probably the best way to put it. But the important thing to know is that this is federal property. It’s never a good idea to try to rob a post office; that’s a federal crime.”

While Kasian could not provide any information about what, if anything, was stolen or how the thieves got into the post office, she said customers are notified by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service if opened mail is found. As far as she knows, the building itself was not damaged.

Anyone who believes their mail has been stolen can report it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service online at uspis.gov or by calling 877-876-2455, which is available 24 hours a day.

Kasian added that this incident is a good reminder that anyone who observes anything suspicious or “shady” on or near a postal facility or even around mail carriers, such as someone following a mail carrier, should call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455 and report it.

“It’s always a good idea to keep your eyes open and report things like this if you suspect something might be going on,” Kasian said.
